The Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im Bank) will hold the first meeting of its 2001 sub-Saharan Africa Advisory Committee April 18, 2001 at Ex-Im Bank headquarters. The committee provides expert guidance to Ex-Im Bank in developing policies to further strengthen Ex-Im Bank support of U.S. exports to Africa. For the year 2001, the Committee will retain four members from the previous year, including David B. Cooke, Senior Vice President, Allfirst Bank, Baltimore, MD, who will chair the committee. The other returning committee members are indicated below

Mr. Cooke is a Senior Vice President at Allfirst Bank (formerly First National Bank of Maryland), in Baltimore, Maryland, where he is in his third decade financing companies in Latin America. Mr. Cooke has been in banking since 1983, and manages a business unit which finances emerging-market buyers of equipment and services manufactured or designed in the U.S.

Ms. Adam is Chief Executive Officer of Adam & Associates International, Inc., an independent health care consulting firm providing a complete range of health care-related services to clients worldwide, wishing to design and build facilities or enhance health care systems. She advises clients on strategy, mission and program development, and mobilizes commercial, governmental and educational resources.

Patricia A. Bagnell, President, Africa ONE, Ltd.

Ms. Bagnell is President of Africa ONE, Ltd., a private company, which will build, own and operate undersea a fiber optic telecommunication cable system that will, for the first time, link African nations to each other and the rest of the world. Completion date is 2002. She has over twenty years of experience in telecommunications and previous positions include work with New England Telephone and AT&T.

Mr. Bolden's current responsibilities include supporting sales development efforts of Caterpillar's marketing units for Africa, Middle East, Central Europe and Latin America regions, on issues with a Washington based link.

Ex-Im Bank is an independent U.S. government agency that helps finance the sale of U.S. exports by providing loans, guarantees, and insurance. In fiscal year 2000, Ex-Im Bank supported $15.5 billion in U.S. exports overall. Ex-Im Bank authorized $914 million to support exports to sub-Saharan Africa in calendar year 2000, up from $589 million the previous year. The number of export transactions to the region supported by Ex-Im Bank jumped 25% to 125 in 2000. Ex-Im Bank was open for business in 21 countries in sub-Saharan Africa countries in 1998, and has been open in 32 countries for the past two years.
